☆♥*♥☆Predicting Marital Satisfaction☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

Infidelity is on the rise and is, according to statistics, becoming more common among people under age 30. Many experts believe this increase in cheating is due to greater opportunity (time spent away from a partner) and young people developing the habit of having multiple sexual partners before they marry (Wall Street Journal). Between 1991 and 2006, the numbers of unfaithful wives under 30 increased by 20% and husbands by a whopping 45%. These numbers come from a study conducted by David Atkins of the University of Washington Center for the Study of Health and Risk Behaviors.

As astrologers, we're aware that between the ages of 29-30 (In some instances 28), we experience the Saturn return.  It takes approximately 29 plus years for transiting Saturn to move 360 degrees around the chart to form a conjunction with natal Saturn. In my experience, with today's values and transitory career options, individuals who marry before the Saturn return tend to choose a partner based upon a family of origin imprints and expectations.  There is less likelihood of marrying an individual mom or dad opposes, for whatever reason.  It could be that your selection doesn't meet their religious, socioeconomic status, age or career aspirations. When a person marries or chooses a partner after the Saturn return, they are more likely to choose a partner who meets their own image of who's right for them paying less attention to parental value imprints, that may or may not work for them.  After the Saturn return, individuals, males and females, better know what they want, what makes them happy, have completed some or all of their formal education, and have secured employment. In speaking with individuals who tied the knot before the Saturn return and are still together after it, concur 90% of the time.

The above statistics aren't surprising when discussing the under 30 population. Since younger generations are living at home and staying in school longer, they're also taking time to experiment with partners before settling down, and it makes sense to do so.  We learn how to be intimate with others, initially, through parental mirroring, then through trial and error experimentation.  When an individual knows what soothes their soul, makes them happy, they are better able to seek and recognize those desired qualities during partner selection, ideally, after the Saturn return.

Jeffry H. Larson, professor and chairman of the Family and Marriage Therapy Program at Brigham Young University, has developed what he calls "The Marriage Triangle," which highlights individual and couple traits and the family background and context that can help or hinder a current or future relationship.

First, are the unhealthy factors that predict marital dissatisfaction. These are the three sides of the triangle:

Individual traits

1. High neurotic traits.
2. Anxiety.
3. Depression.
4. Impulsiveness.
5. Self-consciousness.
6. Vulnerability to stress.
7. Anger/hostility.
8. Dysfunctional beliefs. (If you enter marriage convinced that you live on different planets, or that you'll never understand each other, he says, you probably won't.)

Couple traits

1. Dissimilarity.
2. Short acquaintanceship.
3. Premarital sex (especially a lot of experience with many different partners).
4. Premarital pregnancy.
5. Cohabitation.
6. Poor communication and conflict-resolution skills.

Context

1. Younger age.

2. Unhealthy family-of-origin experiences.

3. Parental divorce or chronic marital conflict.
4. Parental or friends' disapproval.
5. Pressure to marry.
6. Little education or career preparation.

He's also developed a list of healthy characteristics, and the leading factors that predict marital satisfaction:

Individual traits

1. High self-esteem.
2. Flexibility.
3. Assertiveness.
4. Sociability.

Couple traits

1. Similarity.
2. Long acquaintanceship.
3. Good communication skills.
4. Good conflict resolution skills/style.

Context

1. Older age.
2. Healthy family-of-origin experiences.
3. Happy parental marriage.
4. Parental and friends' approval.
5. Significant education and career preparation.

He further states that if he had to choose one trait that would help the most in building a relationship it would be flexibility. That one thing can take care of a lot of potential problems. When two people come together wanting peace and to give to the other, it's a win-win situation.  When the mutual goal of a relationship is partnership, harmony and conciliation, happiness is inevitable.  The choice is yours.

☆♥*♥☆Libra/Aries~Relationship Axis☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

Libra/Aries Ascendant/Descendant
Relationship Axis (1st house/7th house)

Knowing your partners 7th house cusp (the relationship house) and the ruler of that cusp/house provides a glimpse towards the type of partner that may be attracted or who you're attracted to.  It also illustrates the quality of relating within a relationship.

The Ascendant or Rising sign is the sign rising on the horizon at the time of birth. This is the face we show the world, our “mask” for which the Sun obscures. This is our outer personality, temperament and disposition as well as early childhood environmental influences. It's how others see us and also indicates our physical appearance. The ruler of the Ascendant and the aspects (connections to other planets in the chart) further delineate and define appearance.

The Descendant, or 7th house cusp, its ruler and the aspects it makes in the chart, symbolizes of the type of partner attracted and the relationship desires. The 7th house is the house of all partnerships including marriage and legal contracts, yet also considered the house of open enemies or the Defendant in a law suit.

In relationships, Venus ruled Libra rising is affable, charming, graceful in movement and is attractive. Libra is versatile, well mannered and bestows generous compliments. Librans also enjoy beauty and luxury, therefore a beautifull decorated, comfortable atmosphere is important to Libra. This sign  tends to cultivate a relationship, yet if ends, Libra may try to maintain an amicable relationship afterwards. Libra rising folks are deeply upset by injustice and will take great pains to see this corrected. Libra is refined and discreet, yet sometimes unusually aloof. In love, this placement wants equality. Sharing equally in a partnership and compromise are characterisitic of Libra. Attracted to beauty and maintaining peace are important to Libra's well-being. Because its ruler is Venus, values, beauty, art, relating, poetry, music, and socializing are some of Libra’s finest qualities that want to be shared with a partner.

With Mars ruled Aries on the Descendant, attraction to a partner who is confident, assertive and dynamic is possible. The person could have an angular face with red or auburn hair. Very often a combative or assertive, independent partner may be attracted as a projection of those qualities if not already expressed positively; the likelihood of attracting a partner with Mars prominent in the partners chart is likely. A prominent Mars would be in aspect to the Sun, Moon, Mars or Venus or elevated in conjunction to the MC or conjunct or ruling their Ascendant or Descendant. Mars ruled signs are Aries and Scorpio (double ruler-Pluto).

While the Moon describes ones emotional nature and what soothes and comforts, Venus shows what we're attracted to.  An important, quick method for discering compatibility is to look at the sign on the descendant and the planetary ruler of that sign.  Then, look at what that planet is doing in the chart of yourself and in your partner.  The way your partner integrates that planet and its aspects shows how they "relate" to a partner.  Now, look at your own planet that rules your partners descendant and see how it behaves in your chart. Those energies will be felt directly by your partner.  For instance, with Libra rising, the descendant ruler is Mars.  Look to see what Mars does in your partners chart.  Does it make a lot of aspects to other planets?  Are those connections harmonious or challenging?  What about your own aspects?  How are they integrated in your chart? Relationship challenges can be mitigated then positively cultivated with awareness and desire.

Knowing the date, time and place of birth is important for determining the Ascendant, thereby assessing individual character traits and partnership dynamics.

Enjoy your day and remember, I'm available for consultations and readings 7 days via phone, Skype, or e-mail.

☆♥*♥☆Female Sexuality & Relationships☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

What better timing then to discuss sexuality with the planets of love attraction and sexual desires both in the sign of Scorpio! As a currently single female who has studied sexuality and the female condition, it must be noted that there is "still" a double standard when discussing and expressing sexual desire. "Some" women are remiss, fearful or conditioned to limit their response, learned in childhood and reinforced by society. We're supposed to be "good" girls and not like sex too much, only when our partners want us, so then a man will marry us. A woman who enjoys sex, is in touch with her sexuality and is able to express those desires, is considered aggressive, too intense, oversexed or a whore. Let's remember that many men still suffer from the Madonna/Whore Complex, meaning: Men are loathe to marry the sexually experienced woman. It's too much of an ego blow, even though they claim to desire a woman who enjoys sex yet moan all throughout their relationships/marriage about not "getting" enough. Instead, a married man (or a single one) takes a woman "on the side" to experiment with and reveals his true sexual nature with that individual.

Women may be more secretive about their desires as a result of societal conditioning. This is perpetuated, then reinforced, during adolescence, the dating process, and in marriage further reinforced by the "male perspective" and male response. However, many women of all ages love sex (with an encouraging partner). Men tend to condition (read control) the female response to it by their own expectations of who a "good" woman is (it's no wonder women eventually repress their desires or look elsewhere). It should also be noted that women are, instead, relating to younger, open-minded, and sexually accepting males.
This may be a contributing factor in recent statistics confirming that more than 51 % of all married women have cheated on their husbands at least once. The1st time in history, statistics lean towards the female, and frankly, this doesn't surprise me. The statistics are probably higher because women are conditioned towards "silencing" their desires as well as discussing it openly fearing a label and ostracism. Yet this is changing, albeit slowly. Younger generations of females and males are sexually experimental, choosing to maintain "open" relationships. No longer requiring the sole financial support of men, women now choose partners who satisfy them sexually and emotionally. Those partners may be equal to or several years younger, rather than choose the stereotypical, financially secure, older man. Men are finally experiencing a glimpse of what is feels like when a woman chooses to act on her desires, the same way "privileged" men have been behaving for generations; they've taught women well.

☆♥*♥☆ When Planets Retrograde ☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

Hi Everyone,

There's a lot of discussion about retrograde planets and their meaning when they are retrograding.  When a planet is retrograde, it is an apparent backward motion of a planet.

I'll share below how often retrograde (rx) planets change directions:

Mercury is Rx for 24 days; is stationary for approximately 3 days.

Venus is Rx for 42 days; is stationary for approximately 11 days.

Mars is Rx for 80 days; is stationary for approximately 20 days.

Jupiter is Rx for 120 days; is stationary for approximately 10 days.

Saturn is Rx for 140 days; is stationary for approximately 10 days.

Uranus is Rx for 150 days; is stationary for approximately 16 days.

Neptune is Rx for 160 days; is stationary for approximately 16 days.

Pluto is Rx for 160 days; is stationary for approximately 16 days.

The Sun and Moon are never retrograde. Planets from Mars to Pluto turn Rx when they reach an opposition to the Sun, and outer planets remain Rx longest.

Retrograde planets have three phases:

1). The direct motion until the the planet first stations (stops before changing directions),

2). The retrograde motion (apparent backward motion),

3). The direct motion following the second station (before changing directions forward). During this time, as the planet slows down to change direction, this stationary period in between is the most energetically powerful and usually triggers events or illuminates an awareness that may have been already unconsciously known, only to become conscious during forward motion of the involved planet.

☆♥*♥☆ Relationship Needs in the Birth Chart ☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

Relationship Needs in the Birth Chart~Other Oriented versus Self Oriented

The astrological chart is designed like a pizza, sliced into 12 cut pieces. If we cut the pie/chart in the center from left (East) to right (West) (the reverse directions from Earth) the Ascendant/Descendant relationship axis is formed. The East is your personal needs and the West would be the needs of the relationship or partner. When the chart is divided from bottom, North, center (IC) to the top, South, center (MC) the 4th house/10th house axis of home versus work and private versus public needs is formed. Divisions of the chart hemispheres indicated above determines whether you are more “relationship” oriented or more “Self” oriented. Planets located in the Western portion of the chart are relationship and ”Other” oriented. These are the natural house signs of Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius. Planets located in the Eastern hemisphere of the chart are more “Self” oriented. These natural house signs are (Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini). Ideally, it's best to have a balance of planets in both hemispheres as this indicates a healthy approach to relating and the natural ability to meet your own needs in love, relationships and personal growth, and also meeting your partners desires for the same.

When a majority of planets reside in the Western hemisphere, this person might not have enough self confidence to take a stand in a relationship. Co-dependency may exist when the needs of the partner take precedence over the need to take care of self, even when it may be inappropriate to care for the other. This is also called enabling, doing for another that they can do for themselves.

An individual having a majority of planets in the Western hemisphere may feel more insecure or lack confidence in relating, always considering the other first, again, even when it is detrimental to do so. This person may become overly involved in the lives of others leaving no room left for themselves. A person could also be the one that everyone asks favors of, is taken advantage of, and who doesn’t know how to say “no” because of the need to feel needed or for ego validation.  This individual needs to learn to set healthy boundaries in all relationships.

However, if those planets are mostly in the masculine planets of fire and air, this can produce extreme impatience when the personal needs are thwarted or not immediately gratified. This person could be demanding, selfish or unrealistic about what to expect from others. For instance, a fire/air man may be extremely charming and suave yet controlling, demanding, and judgmental. He may have difficulty expressing anger in a healthy way, negatively impacting romantic relationships.

A preponderance of fixed signs in a chart, 3 or more major planets, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius lends to imbalance when there is an inability to change and only want things their way. A balanced fixed chart has the ability to follow through, is open-mined and dependable and not easily influenced by negative influences of others. Mutable folks, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are so indecisive they may constantly change plans or commitments.  Cardinal folks, Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn possess a desire and enthusiasm to make things happen, achieve, and accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Negatively, they may start too many projects and not complete them all.

Having the majority of planets in the Eastern hemisphere would show a person who is overly independent. These people are so interested in having their own needs and desires met they may not even be aware that their partners desires are not being met by them. It is so important to be able to tell the person we love and are involved with how we feel about them and know they are genuinely concerned about us. When there are hemisphere imbalances between a two people, this may be a source of conflict.

Eastern hemisphere people rarely turn to others for help. There is a level of pride in their independence. It can be very difficult to achieve true emotional intimacy with a person who has an overwhelming number of planets in the East.

Now, if we return to the Ascendant/Descendant axis and look at all the planets above this axis, the horizon, these planets are public.  Planets below this axis are private. Planets above the horizon have a need to express and share their ideas, thoughts, and philosophies publicly; they are more visible.  Planets below the horizon are less inclined to want center stage and are "introverted" or more reserved requiring privacy while planets above the horizon are "extroverted" desiring expression out into the World.

A high level of emotional maturity can overcome and mitigate challenging natal energies. The ability to "confront" and express both positive and negative emotions in a health manner fosters intimacy and connectedness.  In fact, a lack of confrontation actually destroys relationships because problems that aren't discussed are denied and pushed under the surface, fester, then undermine the connection.  Knowing which hemisphere your partner’s planets are located illuminates characteristic relating behaviors and aids in personal growth.

☆♥*♥☆ Ducks Fly Moon~Libra ☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

In Native American Astrology, individuals born from September 23~October 22nd are born under the Ducks Fly Moon and are Raven people. They are born under the Butterfly elemental clan, the same as Gemini and Aquarius. Their mineral gemstone is Bloodstone Jasper.

Bloodstone Jasper
Bloodstone Jasper has magical properties to actually stop hemorrhaging/bleeding and provide the owner with a long life. It is believed that it strengthens the blood cells and helps bring oxygen to the blood stream. When Bloodstone Jasper is worn it is said to provide its wearer protection over bad spirits and to allow him to cast spells upon others. It is also worn to protect against snake bites. Associated with the root chakra, it is said to enhance spirituality and intuition.

Raven people, when they have not found their balance, will fly from one mood to another. As we know, this kind of mood fluctuation can cause depression in some. Raven people who have found the balance in their lives can utilize their special psychic powers to help others find their own point of balance.  The Raven are also quite versatile and have the ability to shift and change. They are able to get over and smooth out discord in their surroundings and are adept in assisting others in the same. They are capable of making others feel soothed and welcome.

Individuals born under Raven are also very intelligent and capable of soaring from one position to another rather quickly. These are people who are both comfortable on the earth and in the sky...on the material plane and spiritual plane. They do tend to be group oriented and enjoy the mutual support and cooperation from others. Raven people often mate for life, however, there are just as many who never do. They find it difficult to make a decision about the relationship and will frequently change their mind about whether or not they have chosen the “right” partner. By the time they do decide, so much time has passed that the other person has moved on. Harmony is very important to the Raven.

As part of the Butterfly elemental clan, these individuals are always changing and fluttering around. They are in constant motion, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. They are a whirling, twirling bundle of energy and can bring the much needed breathe of fresh air into any situation. Butterflies possess tremendous powers of regeneration, and transformation.  The Chinese believe butterfly to symbolize immortality and joy while butterfly is symbolized as the psyche or the soul in Greek art.

☆♥*♥☆Tarot Card # 11~Justice~Libra ☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

Tarot Card # 11~Justice~Symbolic of Libra

Justice represents harmony and balance. In all the cards, we encounter positive and negatives aspects of life. There are always choices to make between right and wrong, dark and light and discovering the shades of gray in between. However, what we deem justice is contingent upon our perceptions. We learn through life's circumstances. Justice represents the balance people create in order to live a healthy and fulfilling life.

The image in this card sits a woman between 2 columns. In her right hand she holds a double-edged sword, symbolic of the mind, duality and decision-making. In her left hand are the scales of justice used to find harmony and balance. There are often conflicting elements in our lives preventing us from achieving balance.

This card symbolizes The Universal Law of Equilibrium and pure intellect. The “Sword of Justice” eliminates waste and knows how to prioritize. Whatever direction your energy has been focused, will finally pay off.   This is another card in the deck in which "karma" is indicated. We reap what we sow. "What goes around, comes around". It's Universal "Law". Weighing evidence, judgment and decision making are all implied in “Justice”.

When this card appears in a reading, it suggest that you must look at the areas of imbalance or excess in your life to where moderation and equilibrium will bring you peace and replace chaos. A fair and balanced outcome is indicated. Make correct choices by eliminating all the non-essentials in your life.  Then be careful what you wish for :-).

Enjoy your day and remember, I'm available for consultations and readings 7 days via phone, e-mail or in-person.

☆♥*♥☆Healing Earth~Day of Peace☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

Hi Everyone,

Earth Mother

September 21st is the UN International Day of Peace. The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 for “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people.” Twenty years later, the General Assembly decided that the 21st of September would be observed annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence". All Member States, organizations and individuals are invited to commemorate the day, through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of a global ceasefire.

Today, spend some time, even a few minutes, quiet the mind and  feel gratitude for Gaia, Earth Mother, for without her generous gifts and comfy home, there can be no Peace. Let us focus on the goal of P-E-A-C-E, L-O-V-E, S-E-R-E-N-I-T-Y, & U-N-D-E-R-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G ... for each other, regardless of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, color, age, cultural values, beliefs, and socioeconomic status.  Send blessings to the Universe and visualize healing the Planet and all people...we are all connected.
"God has unlimited anywhere minutes."

☆♥*♥☆Happy Birthday Libra ☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

Happy Fall Equinox Birthday Libra, the Scales!
For those born September 22~October 22!
Key Phrase for Libra is “I Balance

Fetching Venus rules Libra, the 7th house, and includes all relationships; marriage, partnerships, open enemies, and legal disputes.  Libra's tend to develop many interests including theater, decorating, creating beautiful music, art collecting; anything that is aesthetically pleasing and luxurious. Libra's are likable because they exude a certain amount of charm, grace, elegant sense of style and good taste. They enjoy entertaining and all the comforts money can buy, much like Venus-ruled Taurus.

Libra abhors discord and literally runs in the opposite direction to avoid anything or anyone distasteful and unpleasant. Libra wants to smooth over difficult situations and “mediate” the atmosphere. In order to avoid difficult situations, Libra may hide or stifle their own true feelings to not make waves. They're often indecisive and have difficulty making firm decisions and commitments. Libra Rising (Ascendant) individuals are usually visually attractive, charming, and often graced with attractive legs! Libra ascendants are discussed in greater detail further in this newsletter.

Libra folks want their relationships to be fair and in balance. They are born diplomats. Often enough, the task is working at "maintaining" harmony rather than naturally being harmonious. Idealistic, naturally optimistic, and romantic, Libra will do everything in their power to please you. Libra affinity with Venus is associated with the traditional marriage and they're usually involved on a romantic relationship and, if not, maintain several platonic ones.

What you got boy, is hard to find
I think about it all the time
I'm all strung out my heart is fried
I just can't get you off my mind!
Because your love your love your love is my drug
Your love your love your love
Your love your love your love is my drug
Your love your love your love. ~Ke$sha~"Love is my Drug"

Fairness and seeing both sides of a situation is a positive quality while co-dependence is their negative trait. Yet, Libra's appear to marry less often than other signs.  Why, you ask?  They simply can't make up their minds! Libra's vacillate so much in relationship decision-making that the object of their affections tires, feels undesirable, and may walk away....quickly into the arms of someone else. One reason for indecision is that disillusionment sets in when Libra realizes the loved partner is "human".  Separation, detachment, and challenges ensue that "test" the stability of the bond. Libra may be so emotionally detached, like their polar opposite Aries, or act out the negative qualities of Aries i.e.: anger, rage, overly independent, impulsive, egoistic and difficult.

I got tired of waiting.
Wondering if you were ever coming around. ~"Love Story"~Taylor Swift

In health matters, Libra rules the kidneys, veins and the acid-alkaline metabolism.  If the body is too acidic, insomnia, headaches, heartburn and nervousness may result. Venus ruled Libra may also be addicted to "sweets" or succumb to sugary foods.

The Sun is in "fall" in the sign of Libra because its light is often lost to the "other". This means that Libra tends to see others as their source of energy and light which is why Libra's are often called "co-dependent". More on the topic of co-dependence in the next blog. Integration, awareness, and personal growth are necessary goals.

"I bet if I give all my love,

....then nothings gonna tear us apart." ~Drake ~"Find Your Love"

Libra is the only sign of the zodiac that is a mechanical device rather than an animal or human figure. “The scales in Libra had a deep significance for the Egyptians. It was said that at the time of death the goddess Maat placed the human soul on one scale and a feather on the other. If the scale tipped even slightly, the soul must reincarnate with the goal of releasing the extra weight. Since Libra comes before Scorpio, the sign associated with death, which the Egyptians honored in the eloquent preparations for the afterlife, the prime goal in life was to make the scales balance, or to prepare the soul for its afterlife” (Guttman & Johnson, 1991).

Libra’s polar opposite (7th house~partnerships, relationships, law suits, open enemies, marriage) is the cardinal, fire sign Aries (1st house: personality, self, and physical appearance). The integration of "me" versus "us" is a challenge for Libra, also contingent upon other areas of the birth chart. When under stress each sign operates through the most negative characteristics of their polar opposite, the sign 180 degrees opposite itself. When under stress, Libra adopts negative characteristics of fiery Aries, ruled by war god Mars, and loose their balance, becomes impulsive, disruptive, vengeful, or impatient.

Interestingly, there is greater geomagnetic disturbances in the ocean During March/April, the Spring Equinox (Aries), and September/October during the Autumn Equinox (Libra). Fewer disturbances are found at the Solstice Points of December/January (Capricorn) and June/July (Cancer). Since Aries/Libra symbolizes the relationship axis, this dynamic illuminates the unique and disparate energies of Mars (Aries) and Venus (Libra)!

If you have your…

Ascendant in Libra: Libra rising folks possess grace, poise and charm. Individuals with Libra on the Ascendant are usually quite attractive facially. One of their best physical features is usually their well formed legs. They take pride in their attire and care for their physical body.  They are attractive to others and are usually well liked. Mostly optimistic and sensitive, this Ascendant may be deeply hurt by others, yet not show it. Sometimes a bit outwardly aloof, people tend to not understand what is going on inside of you. Artistic and musically incline, Libra rising excels in the social graces. Sometimes possessing an overly dependent nature on others and passive avoidance in decision making. At least four of my family members have a Libra Ascendant!

Moon in Libra: Moon in Libra individuals tend to possess a heightened awareness of people they come in contact with as well as keen perception of any environment. There is an emotional need for comfort and safety within immediate surroundings; it must be aesthetically pleases to the eye. The Libra Moon is charming and usually easy to live with because they possess the unique ability to smooth even the most hostile situations. Libra Moon is intuitive, imaginative and romantic.

☆♥*♥☆ Co-dependence~Relationships ☆♥*♥☆

by Lorraine Valente

We're quickly approaching the entrance of the Sun into Libra, at the same time both Mars and Venus are in passionate Scorpio. Libra is the sign most associated with relationships and Venus is Libra's ruler and she is transiting a sign (Scorpio) ruled by fiery Mars also in the sign of powerful Scorpio. Libra's often have difficulty selecting a partner because they seek an ideal of how relationships should be that doesn't often match reality. Disillusionment sets in as a result of unrealistic expectations causing an inability to fully commit. Alternately, when actually in a committed relationship, Libra may exhibit one or many co-dependent traits.

What is co-dependence?

It may be stated that co-dependence is a form of conformity, to another's wishes. It appears consistent within family dynamics in which addiction or emotional abuse occurs in one or more family members. Co-dependence is a dysfunctional process and learned set of behaviors associated with either living with or choosing to be in close proximity to any dysfunctional individual.

Co-dependence is a major manifestation of the adult child syndrome; a child having grown up in a troubled, unhealthy, or dysfunctional family where family members are completely enmeshed in each other's lives. Being enmeshed allows the controlling and more dominant individual complete control over the codependent one. Being in love, in this instance, means being in control. According to Charles Whitfield (1991), co-dependence is characterized by 12 character traits.
  1. It is  learned and acquired.
  2. It is developmental; a failure to develop, arrested development.
  3. It's outer focused.
  4. It's a disease of lost self hood.
  5. It has personal boundary distortions.
  6. It is a "feeling" disorder manifested by low self-esteem, fear, shame, anger, confusion, and numbness.
  7. It produces unhealthy dependence on others by not trusting, withholding, manipulating, exploitative, and controlling.
  8. Relationship difficulties with self and others.
  9. It's primary.
  10. It's chronic and progressive,
  11. It is malignant and treatable.
  12. Excludes a Higher Power.
Characteristics of co-dependency are as follows:

Co-dependent individuals are likely to hook up with a Narcissistic partner who runs the show for both of them. This attachment style is likely to have been learned from behaviors mirrored to the child via the family of origin. The dominant individual manipulates the other to keep him/her attached to the relationship. This dynamic is prevalent in incidences of domestic violence, where the passive, co-dependent individual becomes an emotional punching bag playing peace-maker to ward off the abuser. However, the passive individual, consciously or unconsciously, instigates a reaction so the cycle continues and they maintain their victim status. There's a huge payoff for the victim; attention, concern, favors, not having to accept responsibility, and even financial incentives.

Surround Yourself only with people who lift You Higher!
Co-dependent individuals only feel good about themselves a a result of being liked by someone else.  They tend to push aside their own interests and hobbies and spend time on the "other's" interest and hobbies. Fearing anger or rejection determines what is spoken; opinions are kept to oneself. Decision making is an impossible task and most are left to the other person because they choose to not voice any opinion or desire.  If a person has no opinions or wishes then they can never be made to feel wrong by the controlling individual, who's happy to play the dominant role. In essence, codependency is another form of passive aggressiveness. Co-dependents are people-pleasers and sometimes victims or martyrs. Co-dependent individuals are always in survival mode and they hand over their power to others. They focus outside of Self, neglect, and lack trust in their own inner experiences. They live in a swamp of denial. A co-dependent person focuses attention on completely pleasing another while placing ones own personal growth, development, interests, and values aside to please or succumb to anothers agenda.

Characteristics of healthy dependence & independence are:

  1. Is reciprocal and shares.
  2. Directly asks for and accepts help and support without manipulation
  3. Supportive with clear and flexible boundaries.
  4. Real with self and others.
  5. Non-abusive, non-exploitative, non-manipulative, and trusting.
  6. Prefers relationships with healthy, independent, and dependent people.
  7. Appropriate amounts of shared and spontaneous contacts and activities.
  8. Free and growth oriented.
  9. Includes a Higher Power.
Forming Partnerships
~Commitment~
The goal of relating is interdependence, forming healthy partnerships and alliances with others. Sharing power within a mutually trusting partnership is the goal. The healing process requires commitment, discernment and trusting ourselves by only associating with trustworthy individuals. That requires seeing ourselves, situations, and others clearly thereby changing behavior patterns. Integration, awareness, and personal growth and contentment is the outcome.
