Cardinal

We've been experiencing a lot of snow here in New Jersey and more is expected this evening into tomorrow.  Frankly, I'm not a fan of snow, at least not as much as we've had so far.  In anticipation, I've loaded up the bird feeders so our feathered friends are fed. I've noticed more birds at the feeders since the last big snow of just under 3 feet, much of which is still frozen in the yard. There have been bluebirds, woodpeckers, sparrows, juncos and cardinals. I was fortunate to see a couple, a male and female cardinal and snapped a photo of the female.

Ironically, the Moon is in fiery Aries and cardinal is associated with the color red, as is Aries. The male cardinal is a real looker!  He's a beautiful specimen, with a lovely pointed crest and large red beak. Cardinal is part of the finch family and appears throughout much of the year. They are beneficial birds eating insects and weed seeds.  They're also friendly birds and make good parents. The male always feeds the female while she is nesting, and he also feeds the babies. Even though the males feathers are more visually stimulating and colorful, while he's sharing the task of incubation (12 days), his color remains similar to his female partner for the sake of camouflage.

When Cardinal enters your life, the message may be to watch your diet and what you eat as certain foods are hazardous to the health.  Cardinal is symbolic of transformation and renewed vitality.  The Cardinal has a loud whistle reminding us to listen carefully, with intuition as guidance and then to speak clearly, reflecting that inner knowledge. Astrologically, cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, are energetc, action oriented, often starting new projects. Draw upon Cardinal's energy to transform an area of your life that will manifest, perhaps, in the next 12 days.

Long Snows Moon (Elk)


Bull Elk

In Native American Astrology, those born from November 22nd~December 21st are born under the Long Snows Moon and their animal totem is the Elk. Their color is black and obsidian is their totem in the mineral kingdom. Obsidian is a type of volcanic glass that is usually shiny like glass. It has razor-sharp edges and therefore should always be “handled carefully.” Obsidian was used in carvings and for jewelry as well as for mirrors. It was also crafted for use in arrowheads. Because obsidian comes from deep within the earth it is said to be grounding.  

Believed to be an intense metaphysical stone which should always be used with care, Obsidian is best used under the guidance of a trained crystal healer. As a protective stone, its power lies in its ability to absorb and transform negative energies.

Elk people are very similar to the properties of obsidian. They can be good mirrors for other people as well as projecting “their stuff” onto others. They are often rough around the edges or difficult to get to know because of their uneven outer surface. Elk people can be very protective of those they love or from “perceived” danger. “They try to get as many cows as they can into their harem, and they will fervently defend them from the approaches of any other male” (Sun Bear and Wabun).


Yellowstone-Elk

 Elk are introspective and clairvoyant.  Incredibly strong and elegant, they are perhaps one of the most regal in the deer family. Men of this totem are competitive with each other about the women in their lives and can be prone to fits of rage or jealousy that may come as a surprise to those close to them.

☆♥*♥☆Turtle Wisdom ☆♥*♥☆

Hi Everyone,

The weather is absolutely beautiful here in sunny New Jersey, as it has been throughout the Labor Day weekend.  I hope everyone had a restful or fun weekend.  This morning, a few hours after our New Virgo Moon, Venus, planet of love, desire and attraction, entered passionate Scorpio. When a planet changes signs, particularly on a New or Full Moon, it ushers in energy and encourages a cosmic shift in awareness.  I pay close attention to people, places, and things that come into my life during this time. 

Today, quite unexpectedly, via peripheral vision, I noticed something stirring in the woods where I feed a colony of stray cats.  At first I thought it was perhaps a squirrel rummaging and scurrying for food and paid no mind to the rustling wind-blown leaves.  Upon closer examination though, there was a large turtle or tortoise sitting in the pet food dish with a large portion of, what appeared to be, a pepper dangling from its mouth-beak!  I looked at him and he at me and I exclaimed, "Wow, a turtle!" out load, then, "I wish I had my camera, I'll retrieve my phone in the car", in my minds voice.  During this brief encounter and having acknowledged his presence, the turtle, who did what turtles do, was evidently startled by my intrusion, dropped the food, and scurried off into the leaves where (s)he stood motionless. I ran for my phone and snapped one photo, here for you, before he shuffled along his way.

I later recalled discussing "Turtle" symbolism with an online friend who adopted a turtle found a few years ago.  Turtle is symbolic of Earth Mother because she carries her shell~house on her back.  Native Americans believe Turtle personifies goddess energy and cycles of give and take. She traverses both land and water which represent the turtle's two homes. She teaches how to protect yourself and set healthy boundaries as well as speaking up if you are attacked.   The Hindus consider turtle or tortoise a lunar creature.  The Chinese believed the turtle to support the World. Turtle was companion of Venus/Aphrodite and Mercury/Hera and Nigerians say turtle represents the female sex organs.

According to Medicine Cards (Sams and Carson, 1999), turtle moves along at its own pace, in its own season.  When provided the opportunity, turtle says "all good things in time" and "patience is a virtue".  Joy and abundance will follow.
