The Devil Card in the Rider Waite Tarot  depicts a horned, bat-winged, goat-like, half man, half beast figure, who doesn't actually exist. Psychologically, he represents the Id or the raunchy aspects of the unconscious.  The Devil also symbolizes feelings when in an addictive relationship. Feelings of being completely bonded to a person in an almost obsessive way are possible. Obsessions cause feelings of being tied down or stifled by the intensity of the energy, almost as if it is against the will. Possibility of merging with a person on a deep level, losing independence and allowing the self to be controlled and enslaved to addictive feelings of sexual love is indicated. 

When love patterns are addictive, becoming caught up in appearances and the physical part of a relationship is high. Limiting the self, choosing to stay in the dark (denial) about other less desirable areas of the relationship is likely. Neglecting or denying what's valued, only serves to increase negative feelings. Without passionate energy and an intense connection, fear and doubt is a possibility. The Devil asks "What is the Truth?"


On a mundane level, The Devil symbolizes obsession with materialism. He is the "shadow". You may feel bound, controlled and owned by acquired possessions or fearful of not having enough. We “are” what we own or without those things we are no one. Possessions and ownership reflect inner insecurities, if that is all that brings happiness. The obsession does not always have to be attached to a physical object.  It can be a thought or a belief that keeps one stuck or self confined in self-destructive patterns, self-sabotaging happiness.


The Devil is card is number fifteen in the Tarot. When adding 1 + 5 = 6. The number 6 card is The Lovers. The symbolism in both cards is contained within each other in that the energy of the Devil is the shadow side of The Lovers. Every individual, even the spiritually evolved, possess dark or negative (shadow) aspects of the personality that may periodically surface. When we are not in love, we are in fear. The Devil suggests facing unrealistic fears that bind and chain us to unhealthy emotional and psychological patterns. The Lovers, urges to seek a Higher Power, and the Archangel provides infinite guidance to those who seek the spiritual path of unconditional love.


The Devil may appear in a reading during a time to focus on ridding obsessions over people, situations and material possessions that control your life. Facing fears, compulsions and bondage to materialism is underscored. If surrounded by positive cards, a commitment is on the horizon.

The Hermit represents a person who teaches the true meaning of life to individuals, also on a spiritual path. The Hermit stands alone and is isolated. He is cloaked in a gray (wisdom) robe, head down, eyes closed, looking within. He holds an illuminated lamp in his right hand held out and up to the sky, as if guiding him on a path. The light inside of the lamp is in the shape of a star. In his left hand, a golden staff is held representing intelligence. The Hermit lights the way for others who have lost their way.

When this card appears in a reading, perhaps there is a need to shed light on a situation in order to heal. Since light casts shadows, it also encourages us to deal with contradictions within, including those of the shadow self. Virgo assimilates spiritual knowledge including the desire to serve. Critical thinking is blended with intuition. Good advice and pure intentions are indicated. You must persevere to achieve a particular goal.  Look within for guidance. Introspection, attainment, and realizing your purpose is possible.

Negatively, the appearance of The Hermit may imply you are being overly critical, obsessed with details, and disorganized. There is a need to organize your thoughts and defer to a Higher Power.

In the Tarot, card #8  is symbolic of Leo. This card presents a lovely, peaceful, generous (naked in some decks) woman standing, gracefully bowing over a Lion. She strokes his regal mane and he appears to be purring like a little kitten!  The Lion is fearless and trusting.  The King of the Jungle may be tamed if you stroke his fur (ego) in the right direction. Have you ever pet a real kitty’s fur in the wrong direction? They look at you in such a way as to imply “How dare you!” “I am the King or Queen and I expect to be treated so!”  Puleeeeese do not fluff my fur in the wrong direction.

The Strength card represents unadulterated strength, determination, and power. However, this card presents a gentle woman, unarmed and without protective armor (unlike the Chariot in card #7 which is “outer strength and will”). She overcomes the lion with her quiet strength; power emanating from within. Strength is symbolic of the inner power of the human spirit to overcome crises, blocks, and obstacles.

Often reflective of calming the beast within, Strength symbolizes psychotherapy. Card number 8, which is essentially female, aligns her intuition to keep the lion (our unconscious desires) calm and in control. The lion in this card is also symbolic of courage to encounter powerful forces, placing fear aside, and to claim our own power.

When Strength appears in a reading, creative thinking, speaking with honesty and truthfulness are combined to promote the ego and ethical behavior. Taming passions, courage, determination, generosity, and having an open heart are indicated.

Negatively (reverse), domination, lack of control, wasting time, and self indulgence may be possibilities.

Tarot card number 7 is called The Chariot, symbolic of the depth of nurturing Lunar folks  offer. The Chariot is the director of his own destiny so long as he stays focused along his path. He is in control and holds rein on his feelings. He leads the way with unwavering focus, ambition, and determination. It is apparent he is anxious to be where he wants to go, which isn’t always where he needs to be. Sometimes this focus and determination is detrimental. It is important to look up from time to time and attend to what is going on around, andthat doesn't have to be distracting. Overly ambitious, excessive desire to pursue a goal “at any cost” may result in “not seeing the forest from the trees”, and may actually sabotage one’s goals rather than achieve them!

The black and white Sphinx’s on this card are symbolic of opposing forces that may require careful blending. Each color wants to move in a different direction and it is the Charioteer’s job to prevent this with his powers of concentration, focus, and determination. Sometimes decisions are made with black and white thinking rather than accepting shades of gray. Balance and compromise to the middle ground is required when this card appears. Being sensitive to the feelings of others, creative problem solving, and keeping emotions in check with one's intellect are symbolic of Chariot.

When Chariot appears, there is a sense of blending yin and yang, feminine and masculine energies. If Chariot enters your reading, he gently reminds of the need to blend assertive and receptive energies. Androgyny may be implied. He symbolizes the destiny you make for yourself as well as the inward journey. He is also considered a workaholic, actively exerting control over his environment.

The Lovers by Salvador Dali

The Lovers card depicts the unclothed bodies of two lovers, a man and a woman. They bare their souls’ to each other. The man gazes upon the woman while the woman looks up to the spirit, Archangel Gabriel. As the angel hovers over the couple, arms and wings spread as if blessing the pair. The sun shines above his head, bringing warmth and security and light. The leaves on the tree mirror the hair on the Angels head…a symbol of the fires of passion burning deep within the lovers’ soul. This sun and fire is also symbolic of our life force and our impulse to create. The fertile grass beneath their feet, and fruit on the tree suggests growth and happiness.

However, as with each card in the deck, and with aspects in a birth chart, there may be negative, symbolic manifestations with this card. The snake coiled in the tree behind the woman is a gentle reminder of the story of Adam and Eve and the temptations we may be faced with. There are 3 people in this card, not two. In this regard, the third person could be an intruder to the relationship.

Triangulation can occur when there is a choice to be made between two lovers or two paths. The Lovers card “is” a card of choices and decisions. Conflicting values arise between sexual love, lust and spiritual love although they are closely related. The card implies struggling with temptation between immediate material desires versus staying true to ourselves on our spiritual path. There may be a conflict between different forms of attraction, values or around money as Gemini is a sign of duality and choices.

When The Lovers card appears in a reading, it can augur the coming or presence of a “Soul Mate” relationship. It mostly represents our intensely intimate and sexual relationships. A loving, committed relationship is indicated and desired above all else. Clear, perceptive communication usually brings a beneficial result. Because this is a card of choices, when it appears in a reading, it could test our personal beliefs, values or code of ethics within that relationship. The need to choose between what really soothes the soul with what may appear as temptation, and ultimately detrimental is possible. This could be an ethical or moral choice. The Lovers urge for union is rather powerful and it takes love to the highest spiritual level, symbolic of the Angel symbolism. When The Lovers appears, it always refers to a relationship based on a deep, unwavering love. There is no force more powerful. It doesn’t always have to be a sexual relationship although the mutual sexual attraction can be unrivaled. The Lovers card and the number 6 symbolize unconditional love, strength, wisdom, service and compassion. How often do we give love without judgment, conditions or strings attached?

The Hierophant is symbolic of belief systems, groups and rules within a group. The Emperor is the masculine principle, the animus and the patriarch. He represents authority and power. The Emperor in the Tarot sits upon his throne, adorned with rams’ heads on the arms and corners of the back of the seat. In his right hand there is the Egyptian symbol, the ankh, symbol for life. His left hand grasps an orb, symbol of the World in which he rules. The Emperor has the ability to know when to seize an opportunity. He thinks, speaks and acts reasonably and with authority. Maintaining order and stability is important to him. An original and independent thinker, he is compassionate, courageous and has excellent powers of observation.

Alternately, the Emperor can be cold and unfeeling, relying completely on his own rules and laws as he judges others. Negatively, he can be inflexible, unyielding and stern. He may also be impatient and restless when under stress. If you draw this card reversed, you may feel more confrontational and sarcastic and may demonstrate a cruel or manipulative streak. Positively, because of his many years of experience, the Emperor indicates an innate understanding of the rules and laws of human nature. The Emperor may also be symbolic of a man currently in your life or one who will enter your life that will possess these characteristics.

Hanged Man~Rider~Waite

The Hanged Man card in the Tarot deck is card #12 and is symbolic of sacrifice. In this way the Hanged Man relates to the sign of Pisces. The Hanged Man is hanging upside down, tied by one foot with the other leg folded behind him freely, with his hands behind his back and a lovely glowing halo crowning his head. Upon first glance you may think he is being punished for some reason and being held captive. Upon closer examination, he doesn’t look unhappy in this position. He is a willing victim/participant and seems at peace. Sacrifice may be necessary; relinquishing confining thoughts and ideas from the past in order to see the light and seek enlightenment. Push aside temptations or instant gratification and just “hang around” and wait it out!

The Ego loses dominance with card number 12. Ruled by illusive Neptune, we adopt feelings and appreciation of mystical vibrations that move beyond the intellectual. Here is where we surrender to a "Higher Power". Priorities change with a selflessness striving towards excellence. Thoughts are stabilized. Shortcomings of constant self gratification become vividly clear. Hidden meanings are contemplated. Sometimes there is a need or desire to give up something in order to receive something of greater value. The Hanged man understands that life is about infinite change and now is the time to listen to intuitive hunches and trust one's own judgment. Spiritual hibernation enables us to view life from an altered state.  In this state, experiences alter values, priorities change and the belief system is shaken.
The 12th number is the “Law of Reversal”; Reversal of thought or a changed viewpoint when the “truth” is realized. Self surrender follows naturally: "I trust the Universe to bring exactly what I want, at the perfect time".

When this card appears in a reading there's a need pause in matters about the question at hand. Sometimes it means a lack of commitment in a relationship reading or being at a stand still or cross roads. Someone isn’t sure about the relationship because there is one foot in and one foot out the door! The Hanged Man can indicate the commitment-phobe. Is he hanging in there or simply hung up? Hanged Man urges to let go of false perceptions and embrace a different point of view.

In the Rider Waite version, the body of a naked woman holding an urn in each hand is shown. One urn pours water onto the land (material world) while the other urn is poured into a pool of water (spirituality). One of her feet is planted firmly on the ground while the other grazing the surface of the pool. Her nakedness symbolizes acceptance of her self, while the pouring of water symbolizes the quest for balancing both spiritual and material needs.

Card 17 reduced, equals the number 8. Eight is the number of power and authority signifying success and material fortune. Above her head are 8 stars; 7 smaller stars and one large bright star in the center. Stars symbolize the guiding light within; an intuitive understanding that we're protected “Under the Stars”. There's a need to see the light within ourselves and to be “enlightened”. So that this occurs, let go of inhibitions (nakedness) and open yourself up to your own truth.  Shine your light!

Negatively, and each tarot cards offers both a positive and negative polarity influence, The Star reversed is interpreted as shutting off spirituality or love for another. Perhaps too much self-love becomes a narcissistic focus.  It may be a person always searching or looking towards the distant Star or a long-lost or idealistic love. Then the need to stop dreaming and “manifest” the desired reality is the message. We do this by permitting the “natural” flow of emotions to thaw, rather than having them freeze up. Sometimes emotions are frozen as a defense mechanism, so that no one will hurt us.

The Symbol of “The Star” may appear in a reading during a time when spiritual or emotional healing is necessary and to see the purity and good under the light of the shining stars above. As above, so below…the stars above mirror the light within all.

The Tower Card~Number XVI~16~Uranus

 The Tower card in the Tarot is card #16 and symbolizes sudden destruction in our lives. The lightening bolts striking the crown of the tower represents sudden change and events that are unexpected and unprepared for. Change often inspires growth and transformation after reality sets in.  Acceptance and reorientation to these changes and challenges is important.  Realize the status quo is an “illusion” we create. Nothing remains the same.

The Tower is typically symbolic of the planet Mars, yet I also equate this card with Uranus’ electrical, lightening bolt response and the impact of sudden awareness in the psyche. It’s the “a-ha” card in the Tarot deck.

Uranus transits or if it's significantly placed in the chart, you may experience nervous energy and events may suddenly and unexpectedly unfold in your life.  Shock is another meaning of The Tower.  Discovering your partner is having an affair, the sudden loss of a job or a person is shocking.  With the loss of a job, there is loss of income and the trickle down effect on every area of life.  With the loss of a relationship such as in divorce, there may be a loss of identity.  When a marriage ends, you become "single" and no longer a "husband" or "wife".  Identity changes.  The heart chakra shuts down, closes up as a self protective measure.  Intentional and deliberate undermining or jealousy is symbolic of Tower.  Reaching a breaking point and decision making are other possibilities. The truth can set you free!

When The Tower appears in a reading, the truth is exposed, sometimes with life shattering consequences. Oftentimes it will appear in a relationship reading to shed light or reveal the “reality” of a situation through crisis. It signifies insight or a heightened awareness after a painful experience. A relationship may end or drastically change course. After the September 11 (911) events, drawing the Tower reminded me of the horror and pain of that day. We are often caught off guard and shocked when the Tower appears.

A friend and hypnotherapy partner requested I write about The Magician in the Tarot, so here you go!

The Magician follows The Fool, card 0 and is the first numbered card, number 1, in the Tarot.  I've always liked the rich imagery of this card. If you look closely at his face, he's intensely focused. Highly creative, Magician has everything he needs right there at his fingertips, on his table, a cup, pentacle, wand and sword. The cup symbolizes imagination, the sword, intelligence and thought, the pentacle is the physical body and reality, and the wand represents passionate desire. With these tools, he possesses the unique ability to blend Heaven and Earth and stay grounded.  Having everything he needs, he lets go of all distractions, further enhancing power and creativity. The Magician doesn't waste time or scatter his energies.

The Magician's ruler is Mercury, and air planet ruling both Gemini and Virgo, the two signs symbolic of thought and the mind.  The symbol of infinity above his head, thinking opens portal to the Divine and pursuit of spiritual truth. He's a master of illusion and adept at manifesting and blending. Be careful what you focus upon, lest it manifest in reality.  Choose your wishes wisely.

The Magician is also a Healer, a Shaman, and an archetype of "Spirit".  Like all Magicians, he creates "magic" all around him, drawing into his life and the lives of others, magical circumstances, and choices.  Magician is powerful as he influences the natural World, yet he doesn't seek power for personal gain. He's an inspirational teacher, an "old soul", who eloquently blends spirit and matter, then communicates this wise guidance to others.

Hi All,

Did everyone enjoy their Christmas? Although I definitely "wasn't" dreaming of a white Christmas, we certainly received more than our share of snow in New Jersey!  My daughter and I spent the last 3 days digging ourselves out of almost 3 feet of the white stuff, and there's still more to shovel!  Did I mention that snow isn't one of my favorite expressions of  Mother Nature? :-)

Anyway, Astrologer Ron Archer, created an impressive, time extensive project, and I want to share it with you.  He set out to interview one Astrologer from each State in the United States.  Ron contacted me via e-mail on September 23, 2010 at 12:35pm EDT, asking if I would agree to be interviewed in his "Astrologers Across America" series, as representative for the State of New Jersey! I quickly agreed to his awesome offer. Tarot Card # 15 XV~ The Devil ~Symbolic of Capricorn


Rider~Waite

The Devil Card in the Rider Waite Tarot deck dipicts a horned, bat-winged, goat-like, half man, half beast figure, who doesn't actually exist. Psychologically, he represents the Id or the the raunchy aspects of the unconscious.  The Devil also symbolizes feelings when in an addictive relationship. Feelings of being completely bonded to a person in an almost obsessive way are possible. Obsessions cause feelings of being tied down or stifled by the intensity of the energy, almost as if it is against the will. Possibility of merging with a person on a deep level, losing independence and allowing the self to be controlled and enslaved to addictive feelings of sexual love.

When love patterns become addictive, becomming caught up in appearances and the physical part of the relationship is high. We begin to limit ourselves, choosing to stay in the dark (denial) about other areas of the relationship. Neglecting or denying what's valued, only serves to increase negative feelings. Without passionate energy and an intense connection, fear and doubt is possible. The Devil asks "What is the Truth?"

On a mundane level, The Devil symbolizes obsession with materialism. He is the "shadow". You may feel bound, controlled and owned by acquired possessions or fearful of not having enough. We “are” what we own or without those things we are no one. Possessions and ownership reflect inner insecurities, if that is all that brings happiness. This doesn’t always have to be a physical object, it can be a thought or a belief that keeps one stuck or self confined in self-destructive patterns, self-sabotaging happiness.

The Devil is card fifteen in the Tarot. When adding 1 + 5 = 6. The number 6 Tarot card is The Lovers card, #6. The symbolism in both cards is contained within each other in that the energy of the Devil is the shadow side of The Lovers. Every individual, even the spiritually evolved, possess dark or negative (shadow) aspects of the personality that may periodically surface. When we are not in love, we are in fear. The Devil suggests facing unrealistic fears that bind and chain us to unhealthy emotional and psychological patterns. In the Lovers, we are asked to seek our Higher Power, and the Archangel provides infinite guidance to those who seek the spiritual path of unconditional love.

The Devil may appear in a reading during a time to focus on ridding obsessions over people, situations and material possessions that control your life. Facing fears, compulsions and bondage to materialism is underscored. If surrounded by positive cards, a commitment is on the horizon.

Tarot Card XX~Temperance~Symbolic of Sagittarius

In the Rider-Waite version on the right, you see the Angel Temperance~Archangel Michael. He sports the solar symbol on his head with light rays streaming outward from it. In each hand a cup is held, one cup is silver (feminine) and one is gold (masculine). Water pours and vibrates (waves) and is blended from one cup to the other. This blending of fire and water, masculine and feminine and the conscious and unconscious also symbolizes conception. The number 14 is the most fertile day of a woman’s cycle. It is also the approximate number of days it takes from the New Moon to the Full Moon each month.



Salvador Dali
Temperance

 A lovely version of Angel Temperance, on the left, is painted by a favorite artist, Salvador Dali. Compromises need to be made to achieve balance in relating. Drawing Temperance means adapting to circumstances, accommodating as well as gathering facts and expanding ones experiences. Negotiation, balancing alternatives, and moderation are symbolized. Blending, creating, alchemy, and successfully combining material to create something new are suggested. Negatively, blind faith, restlessness, being insensitive to the feelings of others, excess and feelings of self righteousness are possible.

The Symbol of Temperance may appear in a reading during a time when emotional balance is required. The expression “patience is a virtue” applies here. There may be emotional days ahead or a need to balance and/or adapt our emotions to bring about positive and “creative” results. If this card turns up next to the Empress or the Sun, a conception or baby may be on the way!

Tarot Card # 20 XX~ Judgment~Symbolic of Pluto

The symbol of Judgment may appear in a reading during a time of soul testing. You may need to adjust to new circumstances based upon a changed awareness. In the Rider-Waite version, Angel Gabriel sounds a trumpet as he creates air. Air is equivalent to breath. There are seven lines or tones radiating from his trumpet = sounds of do re mi fa sol la ti do. The people below, man, child and woman raise their arms up to the Angel as their spirits unfold. Their gray bodies are symbolic of wisdom.

Judgment may symbolize something lying dormant within awaiting emergence into consciousness. Some unconscious truth is being awakened and brought to conscious awareness. Perhaps there was a lack of clarity yet now easily see the pathway to truth. Judgment usually speaks of a time of reckoning, bringing to light that which was hidden. Freedom from past guilt and the inspiration to move ahead is possible now. Darker aspects of the personality may have been repressed or stuffed down inside, because of fear of re-experiencing a past trauma. Perhaps this is a time to judge not only your own motives, but those of the person in question in your reading.

When Judgment appears in a spread, you are being asked if your judgments of others are restricting your growth and your ability to create lasting relationships. The need to transform dysfunctional beliefs elevate you to a higher spiritual vibration.

Keywords: Renewal, awakening, inner voice, inspiration, spiritual awareness, and a desire to improve. Reversed: A closed mind, mistakes from following the wrong advice, having a limited viewpoint, unconsciously motivated behaviors.

Tarot Card # 11~Justice~Symbolic of Libra

Justice represents harmony and balance. In all the cards, we encounter positive and negatives aspects of life. There are always choices to make between right and wrong, dark and light and discovering the shades of gray in between. However, what we deem justice is contingent upon our perceptions. We learn through life's circumstances. Justice represents the balance people create in order to live a healthy and fulfilling life.

The image in this card sits a woman between 2 columns. In her right hand she holds a double-edged sword, symbolic of the mind, duality and decision-making. In her left hand are the scales of justice used to find harmony and balance. There are often conflicting elements in our lives preventing us from achieving balance. 

This card symbolizes The Universal Law of Equilibrium and pure intellect. The “Sword of Justice” eliminates waste and knows how to prioritize. Whatever direction your energy has been focused, will finally pay off.   This is another card in the deck in which "karma" is indicated. We reap what we sow. "What goes around, comes around". It's Universal "Law". Weighing evidence, judgment and decision making are all implied in “Justice”.

When this card appears in a reading, it suggest that you must look at the areas of imbalance or excess in your life to where moderation and equilibrium will bring you peace and replace chaos. A fair and balanced outcome is indicated. Make correct choices by eliminating all the non-essentials in your life.  Then be careful what you wish for :-).

Tarot Card # 9~The Hermit~Symbolic of Virgo.

The Hermit represents a person who is a teacher of the true meaning of life and is also on a spiritual path. The Hermit stands alone and is isolated. He is cloaked in a gray (wisdom) robe, head down, eyes closed, looking within. He holds an illuminated lamp in his right hand held out and up to the sky, as if guiding him on a path. The light inside of the lamp is in the shape of a star. In his left hand, a golden staff is held representing intelligence. The Hermit lights the way for others who have lost their way. When this card appears in a reading, perhaps we need to shed light on a situation in order to heal. Since light casts shadows, it also encourages us to deal with contradictions within, including those of the shadow self. Virgo assimilates spiritual knowledge including the desire to serve.

When this card appears in a reading, critical thinking is blended with intuition. Good advice and pure intentions are indicated. You must persevere to achieve a particular goal.  Look within for guidance. Introspection, attainment and realizing your purpose is possible.

Negatively, the appearance of The Hermit may imply you are being overly critical, obsessed with details and disorganized. There is a need to organize your thoughts and defer to a Higher Power.
